One of the most important items for your horse is the blanket and or sheet.

Does your horse need a sheet or a blanket?

Horse blankets and sheets are important to protect horses from nature's elements. Horses need to be protected from the rain, cold, wind, and heat from the sun. Horses that are left without blankets during extreme weather conditions have more chances of getting ill.

There are different types of horse blankets and horse sheets. Their use will depend on what your horse needs.

Coolers and Anti-Sweat Blankets

These horse blankets help prevent your horse from getting the chills as he cools down after exercising, hot trail rides, ect. These blankets are breathable, some cotton, some with mesh. Fine mesh helps to keep off flies.

Fly Sheet

The fly sheet protects your horse from insects and flies during the summer when they are grazing, stabled or turned out. The fly sheet is also available with additional attachments such as neck covers, bonnets and fly masks. These additional products help provide complete protection for your horse from those pesky flies.

Sheet Blanket

The sheet blanket is a variation of the horse blanket which is much lighter. They are used to protect your horse from dust and flies during the summer. They can also be used as a travel sheet to help keep your horse clean.

Blanket Liner

The blanket liner is placed on your horse as an added layer of protection from the friction caused by the horse blanket. It is placed underneath your horse blanket. They come in different materials. The traditional blanket liner is made of wool.

Stable Blanket

The stable blanket is used to protect your horse from the cold winter weather while being stabled. They come in varying, colors, thickness and weights. Different thickness and weights offer varying degrees of warmth. They are also breathable which enables the horse's sweat to evaporate. Blanket liners can also be placed underneath the stable blanket to add an additional layer of warmth.

Turnout Blanket

This turnout blanket is used to keep your horse clean while he is out in the pasture or turnout. This blanket can also provide warmth during the winter. Turnout blankets should be long enough to cover the horse's belly. The front should also have a good overlap. These blankets usually have pleats on the shoulders to enable your horses’ movement. These blankets also come in different thicknesses and weights. Turnout blankets vary from light weight with no filling for the summer, and heavy weight with filling for the winter.

No matter which horse blanket or horse sheet you use, it's important to keep your horse well protected in any weather or season throughout the year.

I just thought I would mention that when you blanket a horse you keep him from growing a thick winter coat. That means that you need to make sure that he stays warm enough in the winter which entails keeping him blanketed the majority of the time.

You should also think about the climate where you live too. If you live somewhere rainy, then you should seriously consider getting a waterproof blanket. If your horse is wearing a wet blanket it severely reduces his ability to regulate his body temperature.
